This is the site about money. There is no more complicated question than the question about money. It is enough just to look at the definitions given by scientists in their attempts to describe what money is, and we'll clearly see that there's no meeting of minds.

And it's impossible, because money is so comprehensive and complicated thing that no one could ever say what it is and cannot still.

It is not likely that we will be able to give any thorough definition here.

However, the human thought is intended to be expressed, and then read or heard by other people. Because understanding of this thought by readers and hearers gives a probability that some part of the truth will be more transparent. The detailed analysis of the issues how money appears, develops, varies and functions is very interesting. During the analysis we will so see some pleasant (understandable for us) and very unintelligible things.

So, this website is about money, and there is no sense to declaim it anymore. It is better to start reading.

Samuelson: "... is an artificial social conventionality.. money is accepted because it is recognized."

Fischer: "every goods accepted as a medium of exchange should be called money."

Friedman: "... is claims or sales units with a fixed nominal value."

Expressions about money..

"To sell something, we first need to buy something."

Silvio Gesell expressed this idea even more clearly: "People produce goods to sell them, and buy good to consume them, i.e. people sell goods to receive money, and spend this money for consumption of goods!"
